BioBlitz 2012

The Centre for Environmental Data and Recording (CEDaR), with support of Northern Ireland Environment Agency, is holding its first BioBlitz. This is a competitive event, with the winner being the site that can identify the greatest number of verified species within a twenty-four hour period. Crawfordsburn Country Park, County Down, is the location for the event and we will be competing against other sites across the island of Ireland. The event takes place between 5pm Friday 18 May and 5pm Saturday 19 May, 2012.
This event is open to all and is part of Ireland’s BioBlitz 2012 (http://bioblitz.biodiversityireland.ie/).

Introduction to Orchid Identification * FULLY BOOKED *

What: This Orchid identification training day will be presented by Dr. Tom Curtis. The event will include a talk on identification, and a look around Castle Ward for Orchid species. After lunch we will investigate Orchids at Killard.

What: Ted Rolston will be presenting this Macro Moth identification training day course. The course is aimed at beginners. The event will include a look at moths trapped on the Cultra site followed by an afternoon talk on identification accompanied by images.

What: This identification training day will be presented by Roy Anderson. The event will include a talk on identification of species in this small group, and then a look at Ladybirds captured using sweep nets in different habitats around the Cultra site.

What: Ken Bond will share his identification expertise on this training day. The event will include a talk on identification, dissection and a microscopic look at samples. We will then explore the Cultra site for more species to attempt to identify.

What: Mark Wright will give an introduction to Fungi identification on this training day. Specimens will be provided for examination but you will also be asked to collect samples from around the Cultra site and nearby Redburn Country Park for identification.
