Experience Christmas Past
Published: 20 November 2009
This festive season make your way to the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum where you can take part in a host of traditional celebrations of Christmas past. Wrap up warm and explore Ballycultra by lamplight, as the festivities get underway, with ‘Christmas Evening Celebrations’.
On the evenings of Wednesday 9th, Thursday 10th and Friday 11th December visitors will have the opportunity to explore candlelit Ballycultra town at the Folk Museum and enjoy the sounds of carol singers from local schools Ligoneil Primary School, Hazelwood Integrated College and Priory College. On Wednesday 9th December there will also be a traditional music concert.
From 4pm to 9pm each evening visitors can explore the candlelit museum and enjoy the wonderful Christmas atmosphere as they create traditional decorations to place on the Christmas tree. Lighting up the dark evenings will be special guest, Father Christmas will be taking a break to meet young visitors in the Old Rectory and hear what presents they want this Christmas.
The Spirit of Christmas Past event on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th December will also enable visitors to experience Christmas of yesteryear as Visitor Services Manager at the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum, Ruth Turkington says, “The Spirit of Christmas Past event will transport visitors to Christmas of the 1900’s as carol singers and brass bands entertain the crowds with traditional festive music around the Christmas tree.”
“Delicious seasonal food and drink is also on offer while visitors enjoy traditional storytelling. Why not also post your Christmas list and see it collected by Father Christmas,” said Ruth.
This year for the first time ‘The Music Box’ visits the Museum. The spectacular Music Box show featuring Peter Corry and the Ulster Operatic Company, will amaze audiences with Christmas songs, dancers, stunning costumes and outstanding music, from Tuesday 15th to Saturday 19th December.
The traditional end to the Museum’s special Christmas services takes place on Sunday 20th with Nine Lessons and Carols. Places are limited for this special event so telephone 028 9042 8428 to reserve seats.
