Hop over to National Museums for Easter Celebrations

Published: 20 April 2011

Hop along to National Museums Northern Ireland where you’ll find a host of exciting activities to celebrate Easter.

Easter at National Museums Northern IrelandMake an entrance at the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum by wearing your most spectacular Easter bonnet! From Sunday 24th to Tuesday 26th April, children who wear their favourite bonnet can enter the Best Easter Bonnet competition, for a chance to win a prize.

The Folk Museum’s Easter Celebrations also include a great egg trail, street games and art sessions, where you can create your own Easter card.

Ruth Turkington, Visitor Services Manager at the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum says the celebrations will provide a packed day of entertainment for the whole family: “Why not visit the farm to meet the spring lambs and baby chicks and have a go at egg-rolling down Bleach Green Hill.  Visitors can bring along their own decorated eggs and see how far they will go.”

Enjoy the outdoors at the Ulster American Folk Park as it celebrates Easter with a range of countryside activities from Saturday 23rd to Monday 25th April. See traditional skills including horse-drawn ploughing, sowing crops and preparing the bog for turf cutting.

Have a go at spinning wool, basket weaving and rope making, with visitor guides on hand to demonstrate the various techniques. Explore Frontier America  and help dress the scarecrows and meet the frontier trappers and traders of the mid-1700s as well as a host of military re-enactors from the early 1600’s through to the late 1860’s who will give you an insight into military life in ‘Arms through the Ages.’

A special feature of this year’s celebrations is a display by falcons and owls. These stunning birds of prey will amaze the crowds with their beauty and flying skills. Young visitors can get up close to nature by feeding the spring lambs and Easter chicks.

In addition to these events the Ulster Museum and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds are celebrating springtime, as they look at baby chicks born on the museum reserves over the past year. Visitors will also get an insight into what other animals make the reserves their home.

Create beautiful Easter crafts at the Armagh County Museum on Saturday 23rd April at the Easter Family Fun Day. The event will also feature competitions and an Easter trail.
