Researching Neolithic pottery from Irish prehistoric tombs

The introduction of farming around 4000BC brought with it the skill of making pottery. Just like today when choosing a cup or bowl, individual styles and preferences prevailed. Some pots were decorated by impressing cord or seashells into the wet clay surface and along with technical details of manufacture they can be studied to reveal how this process worked in the past. Regional styles developed and similarities between Ireland and Scotland have been identified. Researcher and archaeologist Emma Thompson travelled over from England recently to look at the collections in the Ulster Museum and in Armagh assisted by Jeannie McCredie.
