Drawing Day 2010
Published: 29 June 2010
Drawing sessions were held at the Museum on Saturday 29th May 2010.
Led by Newry based artist, Jim Russell these sessions used the Natural History Collection for inspiration.
During the morning session children aged 6-13 joined in activities which involved working in both 2 and 3D. Foxes, hedgehogs, kingfishers, bats, owls and many more were sketched using two different scales.
The children were encouraged to study their chosen animal or bird closely and try to reproduce shapes, features and proportions.
The session then stepped up a gear and it was time to make models of the animals using plastiscine.
Great fun was had by all! The session ended with the children becoming camerapersons by setting their model into a stage set and taking a photo.
The afternoon session was undertaken by an Enable group, a group of young adults with learning disabilities. Museum staff were pleased to participate in this National Gallery of Ireland event and hope to do so again next year.
