Kissing under the Mistletoe

Published: 02 February 2010

Members from the Chest Heart and Stroke group making pomanders at Armagh County MuseumThe staff welcomed a number of groups to the museum in December to join in the seasonal workshops which explored Christmas traditions and rural customs.

This included several groups from the Chest, Heart and Stroke (CHS) organization, based locally in Armagh and Dungannon.  The day started with a Christmas Victorian tea party, moved onto a discussion about the history of many of our Christmas traditions.  It ended with everyone joining in a pomander making activity, which involved decorating oranges with cloves.

Traditions explored were the sending of Christmas cards, decorating the home, the history of Father Christmas and kissing under the mistletoe!  Elements of the museum’s collections were used to illustrate the session.

Many carers and volunteers joined in the activities with everyone remarking how the experience had been both enjoyable and informative.  This work is part of an on-going project -  the ‘Museum Uncovered’ - which opens up the museum and it’s collections to new audiences.
