Ourselves, Our Museum, and Our City

Published: 18 August 2010

During the summer a group of adults have been paying weekly visits to the Museum to explore the Collections, their own identity and discover the history of the City of Armagh.

Members of the Southern Trust Group at Armagh County Museum (click to enlarge the image)This project supports adults with learning disabilities. So far the group have considered portraits from the art collection and produced a self-portrait, studied the Museum building and made a block print of the design, examined other interesting objects from the collections such as straw craft, domestic objects, hand made articles such as linen cloth, wooden toys and polished stone axe heads.

Continuing on this ‘made by hand’ theme the group tried out weaving on card looms. The project will move on to consider the key buildings in Armagh.  Participants will have a go at producing pieces of art based on the actual buildings and taking inspiration from a number of pieces of art on display in the Museum which depict the buildings of Armagh now and then. This project is part of an on-going partnership with the Southern Trust.
