McGavock house (in storage)

Date for re-erection in the Ulster American Folk Park to be scheduled

McGavock house (in storage) Ulster American Folk Park CollectionJames McGavock was born in 1728 near Glenarm in County Antrim. In the mid-1750s, he left a farm of about 30 acres and emigrated to America. In 1757 he acquired land valued at £50 in Augusta County, Virginia. He went on to purchase Fort Chiswell, one of the last frontier outposts on the Wilderness Road.

On this busy highway he established “an ordinary” (an inn) to accommodate the stream of settlers heading towards the Cumberland Gap and the virgin lands of Kentucky and Tennessee.

Pictured left is McGavock house being dismantled in Virginia in preparation for its journey to the Ulster American Folk Park.
