Metalworking

Click to enlarge: Metal working at Ballinderry Forge at the Ulster Folk & Transport MuseumThe north of Ireland has a rich tradition of metalworking - from the earliest days of iron-ore smelting, to ground breaking steel shipbuilding and specialized aircraft metallurgy

However in the early 1900s most people’s acquaintance with the use of metal was at the blacksmith's forge. Blacksmiths throughout our towns and countryside fashioned raw iron and steel into the hardware required for the farm, for the home, and for other trades.
