Birth, Death & Marriage Traditions

Click to enlarge:The great wealth of historical, religious and cultural traditions that observe birth, death and marriage within the family and the wider community are well represented in the museum’s collections.

There are accounts of matchmaking and courtships, traditional beliefs surrounding weddings and births, stories of wakes, funerals and lots of other lore.

Dress for these occasions, and for others such as Confirmation and First Communion is also well represented.

Pictured above is the wedding of Sr Robert and Lady Bertha Kennedy, August 1883. The bride is in her going away dress, while the bridesmaids are in the outfits they wore for the ceremony (click image to enlarge).
