Click to enlarge: Girl’s Irish dance dress, 20th century, Co. TyroneDress for Irish dancing began to appear late in the nineteenth century, but at that time a wide range of styles was available. The intention was to create a style unique to Ireland, and Celtic embroidery designs made an important contribution to this.

Dress styles were the subject of some debate in the mid twentieth century, and were standardised at that time to the pattern of this linen (‘Moygashel’) embroidered dress worn by a young girl from Dungannon in the 1960s.Later in the twentienth century, dresses became rather more elaborate.
