Textiles & Costume

There are over 15,000 pieces in the textile collection at Cultra, the result of 45 years of fieldwork, research and donations.  It represents the full spectrum of textile history in Ulster, from the thrifty recycling of everyday clothing into quilts and rag rugs, to the most fashionable of dress and world -famous fine linens.

Together with shipbuilding and engineering, textiles underpinned the economic growth of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in the North of Ireland, leaving an extensive legacy of needlework and costume in archives and galleries for the observers of today.
