Exhibitions, events & classes

Since 1980 textiles from the UFTM have been included in over 25 exhibitions, at Cultra, nationally and internationally.  For example –

  • Irish bedcovers. 1981  (Patchwork, crochet, knitted and embroidered bedcovers).
  • Tying the Knot    1991 (Wedding dresses and marriage customs in Ireland).
  • Ulster Needlework, a continuing Tradition. 1990 and 1992. (Patchwork, lace,embroidery and linens).
  • Some wonder in this handkerchief.  1999  (The life and work of designer H.R. Lilley)
  • Fabrics and Fabrication.   2001 and 2003/2004. (The shirt making industry in Northern Ireland, utility quilts, and contemporary textiles).
  • Threads in Time  2006/2007.  (Patchwork and quilted bedcovers).


Exhibition at the Folk & Transport Museum, “Through the Eye of a Needle”, (July 10th 2009 to January 10th 2010) will have an accompanying programme of gallery-based demonstrations and talks. 

The “Head to Toe” 26th September will see a full day of activities at the museum exploring and interpreting the skills and products associated with costume and accessories of the early 1900s, including shoe making, millinery, and corsetry. For those wishing to learn a traditional textile skill the museum’s education department offers a yearly programme of classes and courses, based on the collections at Cultra.
