Corner Shop
The corner shop was the mainstay of many urban communities. It offered longer opening hours than larger shops, and was convenient to where people lived. Very often the corner shop served a small number of streets, so the shopkeeper knew his customers, what they wanted and needed and what they would buy. He also knew who could and could not be allowed to buy groceries on credit during the week with a promise of payment on pay-day.
As well as being a trading establishment, the corner shop was also the centre of local information and gossip, and the shopkeeper, with his knowledge of the area and its people could offer all kinds of advice.
Original location: Nelson Street/Irish Quarter West, Carrickfergus, County Antrim
