Race you to the Crossroads: An introduction to some Old Irish Countryside Games by Andrew Steven.  This illustrated booklet describes some of the lesser known traditional games for the benefit of children, school teachers and youth club organisers.  It tells of distinctively Irish forms of 'skittles', where heavy logs are thrown at target pins; quoit-throwing (forbidden by the Statutes of Kilkenny in 1366, but is still to be found played in workplaces in lunch-hour competitions).  Three types of quoit-playing are described as surviving into the present day.  Sheaf-tossing, horseshoe throwing and road bowls (or 'bullets') are also well organised sports in some areas.  Price: £2.00.
