Diamond brooch
This brooch can be viewed in the George and Angela Moore Gallery of Applied Art. Jewellery fulfils a number of functions including the obvious one of personal adornment.
It can celebrate an event such as an engagement, a wedding, or an anniversary (image, Diamond brooch, French, 18th century, click image to enlarge).
However, jewellery is also part of the image we project, complementing our individuality and our tastes.
The major part of the Ulster museum's collection of jewellery was given by Mrs Anne Hull Grundy, a renowned collector and historian, who started to buy jewellery at the age of eleven with her pocket money. Her generous donation to the Ulster Museum began in 1975 and continued until her death in 1984.
