Books, images and archives

Frontispiece of Neues systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet by Friedrich Wilhelm Martini commenced in 1769.The zoology department has an extensive collection of books on natural history. It also has complete runs of many scientific and natural history journals – access to these can be provided on request.

Notable books are:

Henry Seebohm’s The Geographical Distribution of the Family Charadriidae, or the Plovers, Sandpipers, Snipes and their Allies (1888)

Othone Friderico Müller’s Zoologia Danica (1788)

John Blackwall’s Spiders of Great Britain and Ireland (1864).

The archive also includes manuscripts, letters, note books, photographs, drawings and illustrations relating to Irish zoologists and zoology.

An interesting example is a series of Robert Patterson’s large coloured diagrams, illustrated by the German artist Joseph Wolf. These were prepared, for the Department of Science and Art, a British government body which functioned from 1853 to 1899. They were widely used in schools in Britain, Ireland and the United States.
