From the first cave paintings of animals to the development of digital photography, illustration has played an essential role in the history of zoology. The museum has an extensive collection of nineteenth and twentieth- century zoological illustration, comprising around 400 items of paintings, drawing and sculpture.
Represented in the collection are works by Peter Scott (1909–1989), Roger Tory Peterson (1908–1996), Joseph Wolf (1820–1899), Eric Ennion (1900–1981), John Gerrard Keulemans (1842–1912), Charles Tunnicliffe (1901–1979), Robert Gillmor (b. 1936) and Archibald Thorburn (1860–1935).
