An exhibition of a Proposal at the Ulster Museum

Published: 09 December 2009

Andrew Houston from Killyleagh and Laurel Oliver from ComberThe Ulster Museum was the venue for a proposal with a difference this week. Andrew Houston from Killyleagh took his girlfriend, Laurel Oliver from Comber, to see the recently refurbished Ulster Museum and love was definitely in the air.

As the couple made their way through the new history galleries, unbeknown to Laurel, Andrew had worked with staff at the Ulster Museum to arrange a one-off special exhibit in the marriage section of the Boat Room.  The glass case contained a small ring box with the engagement ring inside. The accompanying card, created by an Ulster Museum designer, said “This ring was presented to Laurel Oliver by Andrew Houston on Saturday 5th December, 2009, the day of their engagement.”

21 year old Laurel said, “I initially walked past the ring and Andrew had to direct me back. I simply couldn’t believe it. I said “yes” immediately and couldn’t wait to put on the ring. There were lots of tears and excitement. It was such a special moment and I’ll never forget it.”

Self-employed Andrew, also 21 years old, said, “Laurel always said she loved the Ulster Museum and, when it reopened, I thought it would be the perfect place to propose. I wanted to make it really special, different and memorable.  The Ulster Museum staff were fantastic and really helpful. I was so nervous but it worked so well and I’m definitely in the good books!”, said Andrew.

Les McLean, Head of Operations at the Ulster Museum, said, “We’re absolutely thrilled for Andrew and Laurel and there was so much excitement amongst the Museum visitor guides on the day. It was such a terrific idea and we’ve enjoyed helping Andrew. It couldn’t have happened in a more appropriate place – certainly a proposal to remember.”
