'Hans' together for Top Science Students

Northern Ireland’s top three science students were recognised today in one of the province’s most prestigious academic awards held at the Ulster Museum. Gareth Gamble, Laura Bateman and Manvi Singhal were presented with the Hans Sloane award by guest speaker, Dr Stanley Hawkins, Consultant Neurologist at the Royal Victoria Hospital.
The students achieved the top three ‘A’ Level marks in Northern Ireland in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Gareth, who studied at Banbridge Academy, Laura, from Ballymena Academy and Manvi from Victoria College were described as “exceptional young academics” by Marshall McKee, Honorary Secretary to the Trustees of the Hans Sloane Memorial Fund.
Gareth achieved the highest aggregate marks in Northern Ireland in ‘A’ Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics and was presented with the Hans Sloane medal and a monetary award. Gareth, who is from Banbridge, is currently studying Medicine at Queen’s University Belfast.
The second prize was awarded to Laura Bateman who will begin a degree in Medicine at Churchill College, Cambridge this year. Third prize went to Manvi Singhal, from Belfast, who is now reading Medicine at Queen’s University Belfast (click images to enlarge).
Mr McKee said, “The Hans Sloane award is in place to applaud young achievers as well as highlighting the importance of continuing Northern Ireland’s proud history of educational excellence. It is a pleasure to recognise Gareth, Laura and Manvi for their outstanding academic achievements in the sciences. Their successes cannot be underestimated and I, on behalf of the Hans Sloane committee, wish them continued success in their future studies.”
Established in 1960, the Hans Sloane Memorial Fund was founded to commemorate the life and work of notable Killyleagh physician, scientist and collector, Sir Hans Sloane.
