Borders

Time/Date - Thursday 6 May - Saturday 12 June

Polish Cultural Week is returning to Belfast for the fourth time as a part of the ‘Polska! Year’ with a range of events to share Polish culture, arts, heritage and language in venues across the city from the 6th of May 2010.

The 2010 edition of the Polish Cultural Week will focus on the Polish folklore and its influence in modern art, design, photography, film, literature and music and as part of this programme the Ulster Museum is pleased to host the “Borders” exhibition.

This photographic exhibition presents the rich tradition of Polish national costumes, worn by members of different ethnic backgrounds which tries to confront the individual with aspects of ethnic, cultural and racial uniqueness.

The genesis of this photographic presentation was a series of discussions about recent changes in Poland. The image of Polish society was frozen during the Communist period, but now is gradually changing.

Poland was once a homogeneous nation, with a small ethnic group. However, Polish society in the present is composed of many different nationalities. There is a continuous influx of new people from all over the world, bringing with them fresh ideas and creating opportunities for learning and growing from cross-cultural interaction.

As residents of New York, Piotr Sikora and Piotr Bondarczyk - the exhibition authors have been privileged to see the social and ethnic crucible which generates and amplifies the energies of the nation.

  • Entry to the Ulster Museum as well as this exhibition is free.
  • This exhibition is displayed in the Ulster Museum's Belfast Room.
