Rites of Passage

People everywhere have always marked the major rites of passage, such as birth, marriage and death, with special customs and ceremonies.

Some of the artefacts inlcuded in this exhibition are:

Japenese Wedding Kimono

Japenese Wedding Kimono, Ulster Museum collection

Created for a Japanese bride on the Island of Hokkaido, 1980. The cranes are symbols of good fortune and happiness.

Masks from the World Cultures Collections

Mask depicting a dying shaman, Ulster Museum collection.   Tsimshian, Northwest Coast, c 1850.   Donated by Londonderry Corporation.From the North West coast of America. Worn by members of secret dancing societies when they performed at marriage ceremonies.
