German soldiers also had Gott mit uns inscribed on their helmets in the First World War, To the Germans it was a rallying cry. Scratched on front by hand 'La Bassee.' Also on 'La Bassee' on scratched on reverse with a cross. La Bassee is a northern area in France, the battle of La Bassée happened 10 October-2 November 1914.
