Sketch No. 16

Description:

Subject : Another example of Roch's fascination with various types of basket. The woman on the left is carrying a creel of turf supported by a headband and the woman on the right transports a load of fish in a different type of basket, balanced on her head. It seems plausible to suggest that Roch was trying to contrast the two types of basket, while showing that both were carried on the head. Several of the paintings in the sketch book feature baskets, suggesting he had more than a passing interest in them.
