Sketch No. 33

Subject : Cobbler in booth. It may seem unusual that most of the people depicted by Roch are wearing shoes. However, in this part of Ireland at this time many townspeople, especially adults and most particularly men, would have worn shoes. The booth in which the shoemaker is working seems to have been designed with portability and ease of movement in mind. Among its contents are a common shoemaker's stool or bench and a range of specialist hand tools including rasps, sleekers, punches and a last.
