Sketch No. 39

Subject : Women gutting fish. The fishing industry was an important facet of life in Dungarvan and Roch captures the business-like manner in which these women were preparing recently-caught fish for sale. Pigot's National Commercial Directory of Ireland published in 1824 informs us that Dungarvan 'supplies a great part of the interior of Munster with fresh fish and is a remarkably cheap town'.
