Sketch No. 40

Description:

Subject : Block-wheel Car with three passengers and driver. Roch has captured the image of a courting couple out for the day under the supervision of a chaperone. The cart on which they are travelling (known as a block wheel-car) has wheels which are fixed on a revolving axle. One of the disadvantages of this was that that the vehicle was difficult to turn, and in wet conditions it created holes in the ground during the turning process. The wheels on this cart are made of three components fastened together by dowels. This type of wheel-construction was known in prehistoric times.
