Sketch No. 53

Subject :Three women. Two have their capes covering creels carried on their backs and one is carrying live poultry. In this image, Roch’s keen eye highlights/identifies the unusual silhouette resulting from the practice of carrying a basket underneath the cloak. A range of goods were protected in this way as they were carried to market. Roch’s expertise as a painter of portrait miniatures is evident in the clarity of expression on the face of the woman who looks out of the painting, holding birds.
