Description:

First World War image shows British soldiers in trenches. This classic image is thought to be of a ration party in a communication trench, the men belonging to the Ulster Division, and the photograph being taken during the Battle of the Somme. Note what appear to be telephone or telegraph wires at the bottom right had side of the picture. Such a communication system was highly vulnerable to damage by shellfire.
