First World War image showing bodies on the battlefield. The photograph reveals shattered and decomposing corpses amidst the mud and debris. Retrieval of bodies from a battlefield was a hazardous and disconcerting or almost impossible task for the R.A.M.C. stretcher –bearers. The harvesting of weapons and equipment was a task undertaken by a ‘provost’ unit.
