Mother of pearl, oyster shell purse. Lined with stiff red fabric, card and has 3 compartments. brass, metal filigree engraved hinge and small clip fastening are what convert this shell into a purse. the circular clip is engraved with a single flower. Comparing to very similar items found in research this is a victorian purse. The shell is fresh water pearl and it is a very unique, beautiful piece. The delicate oyster shell has been converted to a coin purse with tiny brass hinges and a hardened interior fabric. It is in surprisingly great condition and has worked as a much sturdier purse than you would imagine for such a fragile looking item. There are three compartments partitioned and lined with card and red stiffened fabric. Victorian metal hinge engraved with filigree design and small clip fastening are what convert this shell into a purse. The circular clip is embossed with a single flower in centre. This is another great example of everyday items, such as coin purses, being used for mainly decorative and ornamental purposes. Shell purses like these were souvenirs sold at popular seaside resorts.
