Sample napkin

Description:

A sample napkin of unbleached linen damask., having two selvedges (78cm long) and two unfinished raw edges (68cm wide, top and bottom). The central cameo depicts the Tower of Cashel with an Irish wolfhound in the foreground, encircled by a flat band with the following text on -'Irish Industrial Exhibition 1911, In dreasail'. The central cameo and outer border of the napkin feature garlands of shamrocks, with an Irish harp motif in each corner of the napkin. Intended as a sample piece only, the final, finished napkin would be bleached to produce a crisp white finish and would be hemmed by machine stitching the top and bottom raw edges. Usually packaged and sold in sets of 6 or 12, sometimes with a matching tablecloth. Possibly produced for the Irish Arts and Industries section of the Festival of Empire Imperial Exhibition and Pageant of London Crystal Palace 1911.
