A sample (child's) handkerchief of fine white linen with a repeating border pattern of tiny chicks. The pattern has been hand sewn in shadow applique worked in pale yellow and orange fabric. One of a large number of handkerchiefs designed by Herbert Robert Lilley (1886 -1970) between 1901 and 1958. This handkerchief was produced by the Belfast firm of Robert McBride and Co. in the ealry 1900s.
