Due to the latest guidance from the NI Executive, our museums will remain closed for a planned 6 week period from the 23 December. We look forward to welcoming visitors back to our museums when it is safe to do so and we would like to thank the public for their continued support and patience.
A large heart -shaped 'pin stuck' pincushion of green velvet, heavliy decorated with large beads and spangles secured in place with long metal pins. Two cards (possibly cigarette cards), printed with flags, are secured to either side of the top of the pincushion. A small woven silk bookmark (stevengraph) is secured to the centre of the pincushion front with clear and yellow glass beads; it bears the greeting 'For you and yours a Happy Christmas'. The pincushion is edged all around with black silk fringing. Backed with plain natural coloured linen. Hand worked throughout. Densely packed with sawdust and /or bran. Known as 'pin stuck' pincushions as the decorative effect was created by picking out a pattern using glass beads and metal sequins or 'spangles' pinned in place. Sometimes made by sailors or soldiers as gifts, such pincushions often picked out greetings or sentiments through the placing of the beads.
