Hankerchief commemorative

A fine handkerchief of ivory silk, the upper left quadrent of which is hand embroidered in silk floss thread. The embroidery depicts the date 1918 in the form of four flags, with flowers in between and the text 'Souvenir de Belgique' below. Edged with a band of ivory (machine made cotton lace). Handkerchiefs such as this, and embroidery for commemorative postcards was often stitched by nuns at Belgian convents during the years of the First World War.
