Terence O'Neill photographed with Lyndon B. Johnston during his recent visit to the White House, the first meeting between a Northern Ireland Prime Minister and a President of the United States in office. They meet on St Patrick’s Day 1964. In April 1963 O’Neill had invited John F Kennedy to open the Giant’s Causeway during a forthcoming visit to Ireland but Kennedy had refused. This meeting between O’Neill and Johnson was the last meeting between an Ulster Unionist leader and a US President until David Trimble met President Clinton in November 1995.
