Application form to join the Ulster Vanguard Club. In February 1972 William Craig formed Ulster Vanguard as an umbrella organisation in opposition to the prospect of the abolition of the Northern Ireland parliament. Although it was led by elected Unionist representatives but also received support from loyalist paramilitaries. Vanguard’s policy of independence for NI cost it the support of many unionists but it remained close to the Ulster Defence Association. In 1973 it developed into the Vanguard Unionist Progressive Party.
