1975-79: Ulsterisation

Although the level of violence declined significantly in the late 1970s a stable political settlement still seemed unobtainable. A Constitutional Convention was elected in 1975 but its report reflected the views of the unionist majority and was unacceptable to the UK government and nationalists. This period saw expansion in the RUC and Ulster Defence Regiment with local recruits replacing the regular army. The Peace People formed in 1976 and campaigned for an end to violence by organising rallies and working to improve cross-community relations. In the same year the removal of Special Category Status from paramilitary prisoners led to an escalating series of protests by republican prisoners in an effort to have their position as something other than ordinary criminals recognised.
