1984-89: Anglo-Irish Agreement

In November 1985 the British and Irish governments signed the Anglo-Irish Agreement at Hillsborough in Co. Down. This gave the Irish government the right to be consulted on a range of issues in Northern Ireland. Some nationalists were pleased with the outcome whereas unionists were furious about not having been consulted about the Agreement and began a series of protests. Although unionists were almost universally opposed to the Agreement they could not destroy it because there was no direct Northern Ireland input to its operation. However, unionist opposition made it almost impossible to achieve a political settlement within Northern Ireland while the Agreement was in place.
