Prison Life

The Troubles collection contains a number of objects made by Loyalist and Republican prisoners during their incarceration. These include wooden carvings, handkerchiefs and pictures featuring traditional symbols, historical figures, and imagery highlighting armed conflict. Some of the objects are personalised while others were kept anonymous as these could be raffled to raise funds for prisoners’ families. The main prison in Northern Ireland during the Troubles was located at the Maze in Country Antrim, south of Lisburn.
