Cook's third voyage

Cook Atlas, second volume, constisting of maps and engraved illustrations. The Cook atlases cover the three epic voyages of Captain james Cook in the Pacific betwen 1769 and 1776 in the ships 'Endeavour', 'Resolution' and 'Discovery'. The second volume contains a chart of the Sourthern Hemisphere 'showing the tracks of some of the most distinguished Navigators of his Majesty's Navy', as well as a chart of the north-west coast of America and the north-east coast of Asia. Cook was a humane and kindly man with, for his day, an uncharacteristic appreciation of and sympathetic regard for the native populations he encountered. He was killed in 1779 by natives of the Hawaiian islands.
