Horns such as these were used to carry gunpowder for priming flintlock rifles. This horn has a wooden base, hild in place by wooden pegs, and is closed by a cork and metal stopper. One side of the bse has a longer portion which has been pierced with two holes to enable it to be slung from a belt of bandolier. Engraved on the horn is a view of New York and a map of the territory northward to the Canadian border with the forts on the Hudson and Mohawk rivers. As well as showing all the miitary forts along the route, there are illustrations of large houses with their owners' names alongside, indicating that McCalum was a seasoned traveller.
