Artists have always exploited the technical developments of their age. Using individual works of art as exemplars, this course will introduce you to the advantages and disadvantages of techniques as various as fresco, tempera and oil; embroidery and manuscript illumination; drawing and sculpture; printmaking, photography and mixed media. Each technique will be examined in relation to the wider professional, technical, social and economic factors that have affected its development and usage over the centuries.
