Slow Stitch

When: Thursday & Friday mornings - 16th, 17th, 23rd, 24th, 30th & 31st January, 6th & 7th February

In times gone by it was traditional to sit together to make and mend. Join one of our visitor guides and be a part of the Slow Stitch movement. Bring along your needles and learn about this traditional craft.

Indian Bead Work

When: 18th & 25th January, 1st & 8th February

Join us in the unique setting of the Rogan House, from 1800s Tennessee, for some traditional Indian bead work. Watch as our skilled craftspeople bring alive one of the best-known art forms of the Native American people.

Corn Dolly Making

When: 19th & 26th January, 2nd & 9th February

Corn dollies, or corn mothers, were once an important part of harvest customs. It was believed that the spirit of the corn lived in the crop and that the harvest made it homeless. To prevent this, the last sheaf would be made into a corn dolly, where the spirit would remain over winter until it was ploughed into the first furrow of the new season. Learn more about this wonderful tradition and make your own corn dolly to take home.

St Brigid’s Day

When: 1st February

Celebrate the traditional Gaelic spring festival! Make a Brigid’s Cross of your own and hear about this day’s traditional customs. St Brigid’s Day celebrates the hearth and the home and marked the lengthening of days and the early signs of winter’s end.

Ahoy! Join us in our Ship & Dockside Gallery to experience life at sea! Learn a traditional sea shanty before you board the emigrant ship for America. Check out Punch & Judy shows and learn how to secure the rigging to survive the perilous voyage across the Atlantic!
