Small Wooden Stool
Saturday 13th October
Time: 10.00am – 5.00pm
Join our special guest artisan David Cousley, woodwork specialist, and with his guidance learn how to use a drawknife, drill with a brace and bit and spokeshave on a traditional shaving horse. Your hand crafted stool will be made from ash and elm wood.

Wood Carved Harvest Mouse
Sunday 28th October
Time: 10.00am – 4.30pm
Join our wood carver for the day and learn some of his skills. Using native lime wood, which was the carver’s medium in the 1600s, participants will carve Harvest symbols such as leaves, acorns or a mouse. Other demonstrations on how to carve a rose and lettering as well as how to sharpen tools will be given. To end your day, participants will be taken on a tour of the Museum’s carpenter’s workshop.

Wooden Garden Rake
Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th November
Time: 10.00am – 4.00pm
This year as you gather up your garden leaves why not use a wooden rake made by your own hand? Spend the weekend with guest tutor David Cousley learning how to use a drawknife, drill with a brace and bit and spokeshave on a traditional shaving horse. Your rake will be made using ash wood.

Wooden Bowl

Join artisan David Cousley, a woodwork specialist, and spend the day hand crafting a traditional wooden bowl. The bowl is made from freshly felled green sycamore and birch wood and is shaped with hand tools

Wood Carving: Lettering
Saturday 2nd March
Time: 10.00am – 4.30pm
Join our guest tutor for a day of woodcarving. You will be taken on a guided tour of the Museum’s Carpenter shop before learning different styles of lettering such as Celtic, Roman times and Gothic. Participants will use teak to create their own personalized plaque which will be oiled and waxed before you take it home.

Wood Carving: flower plaque

Using native lime wood, which was the carver’s medium in the 1600s, participants will carve a rose similar to those found on the bedheads on board Titanic. You will be shown how to sharpen tools and carve letters. To end your day, participants will be taken on a tour of the Museum’s carpenter’s workshop.
