This second conference in a series of maritime heritage-themed conferences, jointly organised by National Museums Northern Ireland, National Historic Ships UK, Gerry Brennan (Silvery Light Sailing), and Robin Masefield, will highlight this aspect of Ulster’s unique maritime heritage. 

There will be a number of speakers from a maritime and heritage background with a focus on schooners from around Ireland and the industries they were involved in.  This conference also includes a visit to the newly opened exhibition on the Carrickfergus schooner Result which now sits at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.

Speakers will include:

Kelly Wilson- Kelly’s Coal Boats

Fred Ternan- Fermanagh Cots

Christopher Kenny- the Carrickfergus schooner Result

Joe Ryan- Irish schooners in WWII

James Elliot, Chair of Portaferry and Strangford Trust- "Some Portaferry Vessels"  A look at the days before widespread road transport when small schooners ranged the Irish Sea carrying cargoes to and from these shores.  It will use some vessels based in Portaferry as examples.
